In today’s world, we are all digitally connected for business or entertaining purposes.
This “connection” gives the possibility to many agencies to track our every move for advertising or other more malevolent reasons.
How can we safeguard ourselves from such kind of monitoring?

Enter DoH – DoT.  
DoH (DNS over HTTPS) and DoT (DNS over TLS) are two techniques where DNS (Domain Name System) requests are encrypted in a way that it is almost impossible for your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to decrypt them on the fly and monitor your online activity.  
Most people believe that since they are using such a technique they’re safeguarded.
Unfortunately that isn’t always true.

Enter NO-Logging DNS.
Despite that you could be using DoH or DoT for your DNS queries, when using your ISP’s DNS server(s) these queries might be logged.  
These logs can be decrypted at a later stage and thus give valuable insights of your online activity.
It is therefore absolutely crucial to choose a DNS provider that apart from providing DNS encryption will also not log the DNS queries.
This can be time consuming and even difficult choice for people that, what they want is to configure things with ease and get going with their daily activities.

In the App

Choose a DNS provider from the dropdown list.
Choose a protocol from the dropdown list.
Choose whether you want to filter ads & malware.
Click / tap submit.

On the device

iPhone / iPad

Settings -> General -> VPN & Device Management -> DNS.
Select DNS Shield.
Disable iCloud Private Relay (if enabled).

Mac

System Settings -> Network -> Filters or VPN & Filters.
Enable DNS Shield.

 

iCloud Private Relay operates in a very low system environment and can’t be disabled by an app.
It overrides all other filters and takes precedence.
It can only be disabled by the user.

Through the app, you can submit your feedback and support requests.

You may notice that when the configuration is active you may not have internet access.
That may happen for two (2) reasons, either the internet provider or corporate network are blocking the specific DNS Server(s) or the DNS Server(s) are down.
To address the issue try with an alternate DNS provider from the list.
If after trying with several providers internet access is not restored, you are most probably operating in a network with harsh surveillance practises.
In that case you may deactivate the configuration through the settings or choose to not operate in this network.

You can try running a DNS leak test (i.e. https://www.dnsleaktest.com) but this works only for DoH testing.  We plan to incorporate these kind of tests in a future version.

Sometimes, when in corporate or other networks, you may need to access internal sites.  These sites can only be resolved by using the internal dns server(s).  As we want to provide the best user experience we provide the option to disable the external DNS resolution in one or more interfaces and thus access internal sites without the need to completely disable the configuration.

Filtering of malicious / harmful sites (malware) and advertisement (adware) is done by the DNS providers at the DNS server(s) level.
Each DNS provider might use their own list or utilise publicly available lists of these sites.
You can enable this option in the app by toggling the Block harmful sites button.

Generally speaking you should choose the DNS provider closest to your geographic location.
We are planning on adding network latency measurements to the app so that you can make more informed decisions.
